Positive and negative effects of imperialism

Imperialism refers to the policy of extending a countries power over other regions and countries through colonization or military use. In the late 20th century, a number of countries were fighting for freedom. Countries like America and India became independent of imperialism and are now democratic.
However ill this concept sounds, it has done a lot to develop the world. It has its positive sides as well as the negative ones.

Positive and negative effects of Imperialism

Positive effects of Imperialism

It is needless to mention how positive it is for the imperialists. Imperialism gave the imperialists a new market, a new labor force, a new supply of raw materials. Cheap and easy to find raw materials and labor force was the main attraction for the industrialists to imperialize certain countries.

The efforts put in by Europe to colonize weak countries resulted in improvement of education and sanitation in the colonized countries. Countries such as African regions were so desolate that they needed proper education facilities. Literacy rates came up. In major parts of the world, the education system being followed was set up by the imperialists themselves. A thriving example is India itself. With moderations, it is definitely following the British system of Education.

Africa specially gained a lot from Imperialism. Schools and hospitals were built. Factories were set up increasing job opportunities. Unemployment was well taken care of during Imperialism. Also, with betterment of medical services, average life expectancy went up.

Imperialism brought about a lot of political order and stability in many of the colonies. Africa was tamed, one can say. Regional disputes and warfare were stopped, unnecessary wars curbed.

The products manufactured by the colonies were sold in the international market, hence making the colonies richer. The colonies expanded economically.

Nations unified and globalization following imperialism. Also, in the process to get rid of imperialists, nations came together within themselves. Garbage collectors and business men – all came together to form a team and rid the country of outsiders. It marked the history pages with proof that anything can be won if we’re united enough.

Negative effects of Imperialism

One of direct effects of imperialism was that colonies lost their lands and were under the control of their colonizers. There was no place to call one’s own and it was a pathetic condition for natives.

Diseases like small pox were carried out of Europe and into the colonies. Due to such diseases people died, since they had no resistance to them. Africa was a major victim here.

In the imperial states, natives were subjected to slavery. They lost their sense of independence and were assaulted mentally as well as physically.

The mother nations were subjected to heavy taxation policies, draining them of their wealth. Natives had no role in the government which was pathetic. Even if they were chosen to represent the government, it was name sake. No power was left in the hands of the natives. They were puppets in the hands of colonizers. Cultural clashes were inevitable. Warfare and bloodshed was everywhere. Battles amongst colonizers and colonies became a constant. It became a way of life for the natives. Loss of culture and customs was another issue. When the colonizers took over, they made a lot cultures and customs illegal. It led to the loss of rather rich and artful customs that are lamented even today.

For example, when British captured India, they destroyed their native culture. A feeling of discrimination and prejudice was increased. British in India had set up “European Only” public places including gardens, pubs, railway stations and restaurants. The only Indians allowed to enter the premises were those who served the British customers. They were made to serve even the British dogs. British people were carried by the natives in wagons, they didn’t walk. Indians never got any payment for their work; they became poorer by the day. Indian good were forbidden so that they were forced to buy British good.

When the colonizers imported food, the demand of cash crops increased. Slowly, it led to famines in the colonized areas. People died of hunger and epidemic due to imperialism.

Though imperialism brought about employment, it never allowed the growth of traditional cultures. People were forced to do what the imperialists wanted of them. Everybody became a farmer or a server. White collar jobs were reserved only for the Imperialists. This set back the true development of the native land.

To project the kind of thinking people had regarding imperialism, I’d quote Hassan Nasrallah,
“So long as there is imperialism in the world, a permanent peace is impossible.”

Positive and Negative effects of internet

Internet has taken the world by surprise with its magnificent powers of eliminating the boundaries of space and time. Its grandeur is magnified by the fact that it enables one to do tasks that were regarded as nothing short of “miraculous” by people a few decades ago.
Internet is a global system of inter connected networks that help the sharing and manipulation of various kinds of data by following a set of protocols. Internet service providers help you get a connection to this wide network. Though internet has proven beneficial to us, it has its negative points. Let us explore them in detail.

Positive and Negative effects of internet

Positive effects of Internet

“Right now, with social networks and other tools on the Internet, all of those 500 million people have a way to say what they’re thinking and have their voice be heard” says Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook.

Internet has made doing research on an elementary level much easier. Instead of pouring over old books we can as well type a few words on the net and get all relevant information in a matter of seconds. This has helped build the conceptual framework of scholars and encouraged sharing of knowledge.

Communication has shifted from snail mails of e-mails, long lines in front of telephone booths to smart phones and post cards to GIFs. One can now log on to Skype and have a face to face chat using its video calling services and that too free of cost! Reuniting with childhood friends on social networking sites and catching up with families have never been easier!

Teleconferencing and data sharing helps people around the globe sit together in a conference. It saves a lot of traveling time and cost and can be conducted anywhere, anytime. Internet also facilitates people by tracking weather reports. If there’s a hurricane due, your net would warn you!

Internet has increased employment in a number of ways. One can work from the luxury of their home on the internet now. Posting of advertisements and recruiting employees from all around the globe is facilitated by the net. One can display their products on the net and connect with prospective buyers with distance not being an issue.

Trade is flourishing due to e-commerce sites. E-wallets are also helping and encouraging business. Boundaries of nations are not a problem anymore. Also, nowadays shopping with your wife doesn’t necessarily mean walking up and down the streets laden with bags in the scorching sun.

Internet has made several tasks easier, cheaper and faster. Data storage and retrieval doesn’t take hours and long piles of notebooks, all you need is a little pen drive and some handy skills.

Negative effects of Internet

With information, internet also provides us with entertainment. Games are one of the top forms of online entertainment. Adults and children alike are sometimes addicted to these games which can be extremely harmful for them, both personally and professionally. They start devoting most of their time to the net, and as the old saying goes “Time is Money”.

Again, with scholastic information, some rampantly unproductive content is also available freely on the net which can corrupt the minds of young, growing children. Violent and overly inappropriate visuals can cause long lasting damage.
Social networking, though beneficial, can sometimes engulf you in the virtual reality to such an extent that you start losing your actual identity. People lose touch with around the in order to communicate with people miles away. Needless to say, it ends relationships disastrously.

Data manipulation by criminals on the net causes breaches that can be extremely harmful. Internet facilitates all sorts of hackers and crackers, leaving your data vulnerable. No matter how high a method of security we use, internet permits loopholes to exist.

Lack of creativity and Cyber bullying are other instances of disadvantages of the net. Insomnia, physical inactivity, abandonment of the family, internet addiction, cheating, corruption, morally unacceptable behavior and crimes are on the rise since internet came into existence.

It has its great uses, but internet is also a potential hazard. To justly sum up the powers of the net, I’ll echo Dorothy Gambrell (Cat and Girl Volume I),
“If television’s a babysitter, the Internet is a drunk librarian who won’t shut up.”
