Positive and negative effects of food preservation

In the fast-growing economy of today’s world, almost everything has become complex. We hardly have time for anything. Most people strained under the work pressure seem to neglect their eating habits. Specially the people in the foreign countries. Most people are seen stocking on the ready to eat food, or packed food, or a bag of chips and can food. These kinds of eatables have been made for emergency uses but people are seeming to be getting dependent on them on a daily basis.

These types of foods are harmful to health if taken in too much quantity. This is because food preservation makes use of additive substances known as food preservatives. These are the elements which are used to preserve the food for a longer period of time. They prevent packaged food from going stale and inedible in a short period of time. These preservatives, when consumed in excess, can be deteriorating to a person’s health.

But there are some positive sides and some negative sides to everything. So, the positive and negative effect of the food preservation are mentioned as follows.

Positive and negative effects of food preservation

Positive effects of food preservation

  • Home food preservation: Some people make their own baby food and preserve it themselves at home without buying any packed baby food from outside. This is beneficial in 2 ways. The first one is that you won’t need to add those harmful preservatives that comes in the already packaged food. The second one is that you save a lot when you preserve your own baby food. They can have an early expiry date but at least they will be safe for consumption.
  • Save up on money: One can easily save up on money by the help of food preservation. You then won’t need to buy food stuffs every time you need some. Keeping some healthy food preservation or doing the same at home can help you save up some nice bucks every day.
  • Easy alternative in case of emergency: Suppose that you came home from work late and it is already time past the dinner time. You don’t have time and the energy to get up and prepare yourself something to eat. At such a time, food preservation is there to the rescue. You can eat some of the food preserved by you at home or the ones that are available in the market. This way, at the time of emergency, food preservation does help someone fill their hunger.

Negative Effects of Food Preservation

As per the negative effects, there can be many points in this regard. These are as follows.

  • Unfit for health: These preserved food items are really not good for health. Stale food tends to lose its nutrition content with time when kept for a long time. Eating food which is lacking in nutritional value can cause damages to health. This is a big drawback of food preservation.
  • Deadly diseases such as cancer: Food preservation can cause deadly diseases such as cancer and heart attack. Since these kind of food items fall short of nutritional values, they become the cause of these deadly diseases that slowly kills a person.
  • Obesity: Food preservation is done with the help of food preservatives which are chemicals used to protect food. These preservatives often become the cause of obesity. Preserved food is generally addictive and people tend to eat a lot of it. This increases the amount of fat in their body that makes them obese. And obesity is nothing less than a disease.
  • Increased cholesterol levels: Food preservation becomes the major cause of the rise in the cholesterol levels. The increased consumption of preserved food and the food preservatives lays more stress on both the liver and the heart. They immediately add to the cholesterol levels which are responsible for strokes and other diseases. This is also one of the very negative side effect of the food preservation.
  • Infertility: The food preservation done and consumed may be the cause of infertility. The increased amount of food preservatives taken consist of modifies GMOs which can become the primary causes of infertility in men and women.
  • Harmful for the kidneys: The preserved food that lacks the proper amount of nutrition can cause a havoc on the kidneys. Since the kidneys will have to work more than enough to digest those preservatives, they can overtime start to fall back in doing their job properly.

Food preservation when used and done at a certain extent, can prove to be beneficial in some cases. However, increased usage of it is very injurious to health and must be avoided in all cases.

Positive and negative effects of politics

In any country, Politics are a major part of its development and history. Without a well organized political system, a country is unlikely to develop and stand through the challenges that surround its progress. Political leaders and motivators are the some of the important persons that run and maintain a political system of a country. Being an important part of a country, it needs to be very well focused towards the nation’s progress and the betterment of its people.

But does the whole political scenario always does good for a country? What if the leaders aren’t worth it? What if the system breaks down due to some illegal actions or discrepancies. What kind of effects would it then be resurrecting on a country?

These questions can have many answers. Since there are both positive and negative effects of Politics on a country and society. These points have been detailed as follows.

Positive and negative effects of politics

Positive effects of Politics

  • Democracy – One of the very important reasons that we’re even concerned about the political system is the Democracy. Democracy can be defined as a form of government which is being followed presently. In the earlier times, it was Aristocracy that followed. A very positive effect of the political system has been that it has brought the concept of democracy in our world. It is undoubtedly the best form of government which brings fairness of choices to every one alike.
  • Right to Vote – It is because of the political system that in India, every person above 18 years of age holds an equal right to vote regardless of their caste or creed. This quite nicely promotes the equality idea that we work on. The politics in this sense produces and equal opportunity for all the citizens of a country and an equal right to participate in the elections as well.
  • Regional Political Parties – It is often seen that some areas or regions of a country do not get enough attention due to some or the other reason. To affix this, a lot of regional parties originate as a result of politics. These regional parties are successful in attracting attention to their regions and make amendments. This way, all the regions come under the eye and equal development can be achieved for the whole country. Plus, regional parties increase the political competition and the chance of emerging of some great leaders.

Negative effects of Politics:

  • Dynasty politics –One of the most negative things about politics is that it follows the dynasty nature. A maximum chunk of Indian Politicians with MPs has previous connections to politics. As a result of this, other leaders don’t get a chance. This serves as impartiality in Politics which is a very negative point.
  • Corruption – A word with which everyone today is familiar with. Thanks to the politics, it has been quite deep rooted in the present culture. This is nothing but a result of negative politics when leaders try to use politics as a reason to draw in all the money for themselves. This is done by many and is unfortunately the worst effect of politics.
  • Pricing of votes – Democracy may promote an equal right to everyone to vote. But looking on the negative side, most votes today are bought. Setting a price on the votes, they are easily bought and favored under with the help of a few pricy notes. Not only foes this promotes corruption, but also granting of power to undeserving leaders.
  • Cynicism – Politics have surely introduced basic human rights such as the RTI (Right to Information). But it is hardly used, thanks to the political threats and all the run-through. The negative effect of politics ponders over the people and they are drawn to the fearful side where the RTI cannot be used by a common man.
  • Power to the powerful – Politics is the dirt land where the powerful holds all the power and the common man holds all the sufferings. Politicians and people belonging to strong political backgrounds and families hold all the power and can most likely make anything happen. Amidst all of this, the common man is bound to suffer. This is one of the worst negative effect of the politics.
  • No general participation – It can be very well seen that people and politicians never interact apart from the time of elections. Being a negative thing, this is also the most obvious reasons why people and politicians do not mix. There’s no sharing of ideas or insights and both are unaware of each other’s actions or needs.

Positive and negative effects of the crusades

“If you are an Arabic-speaking, Greek-Orthodox going to a French school it makes you deeply skeptical if you have to listen to three different accounts of the Crusades – one from the Muslim side, one from the Greek side and one from the Catholic side.” – Nassim

Beginning in 1095, the crusades were the wars fought in the medieval era (11th, 12th and the 13th centuries) in the Eastern Mediterranean region, sanctioned by the Church, in an attempt to recover their Holy Land from the Islamic rule. The 196 year long battle was won by the Muslims, but not in a satisfactory form. The Muslims were left too weak to expand their rule over Europe. Jerusalem, the place holy to Islam, Christianity and Judaism was the target region.

The Christians, Muslims and Jews had their share of positive and negative effects during the crusades. The bloody battles were fought for holy rights and with an aim to maintain sanctity, but in reality they were meaningless acts initiated by inhuman feelings amongst those in power.
Nevertheless, they did have their benefits.

Positive and negative effects of the crusades
Positive effects of the crusades

When Christians moved to the Middle East, they learned a lot about the new culture. The West and the East merged their food, culture and ethics for the first time. They learned about a number of new things that were otherwise unknown to them. Also, the economy and trade sectors of both countries flourished. New foods and clothing materials like muslin were now available in the Western markets.

The Muslims also benefited in a similar way. They learned about arms and ammunition that were otherwise foreign to them. The concept of standing army was introduced to them. Also, it was a great opportunity for Muslims to show their unity. They also promoted schools and mosques heavily during that period of the history.

Feudalism was a huge issue in Europe at that time which was solved due to the crusades. The Western Europe got free of the system of feudalism.

Also, medical advancements were noted by Persian and Arabian soldiers. This improved the lifestyle of people living in these countries. The East and the West came together for the first time and gave us a glimpse of the Renaissance.
A heightened knowledge of geography, literature and mathematics was passed to and fro. Cultures intermixed to increase the knowledge of humans and the pages of history were marked with a sense of certain enlightening knowledge.

Negative effects of the crusades

Jews were hit the hardest during the crusades. When crusaders crossed the north of France and Germany, a lot of Jews were killed without cause. Their temples and books were destroyed. Their synagogues were in peril. By the end of the war, Jews had no land to call their own. They were thrown out of the East and were despised by the West. Segregation for the Jews spread throughout Europe and Jews were being killed mercilessly. It severed ties between Christians and Jews.

Monarchy became dominant and the kings increased taxes in order to get funds for the crusades. The Christian and Muslim soldiers were killed in equal numbers. Bloodshed and unrest engulfed the continent. Feudalism ended but the heavy taxes levied by the Monarchs were a burden. Also, a lot of damage to the so called “holy land” was done.
The crusades led to a war between the West and the Middle East that continues till date. The saddest part is that nobody is ready to back off, to apologize. A lot of people were killed. Even more people were enslaved and had to live terrible lives. Aggressive and violent rulers emerged during that era and such leaders continued to poison the minds of the innocent.

A lot of beautiful cities and landscapes were demolished. Technological advancements were lost and research had stopped. Constantinople is an excellent example of the damage done. The city was looted like anything and was left vulnerably helpless.

The crusades played an important role in shaping different religions and their ideologies towards each others. As Karen Armstrong claimed, “Ever since the Crusades, when Christians from western Europe were fighting holy wars against Muslims in the near east, western people have often perceived Islam as a violent and intolerant faith – even though when this prejudice took root Islam had a better record of tolerance than Christianity.”

Crusades were unjustifiable. The fights were meaningless, and the masses participated in it driven by nonsense about religious issues fed to them by those in power at that time. A lot came out of it – but to whose advantage it played is yet to be decided.

Positive and negative effects of stress

“Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy. There’s going to be stress in life, but it’s your choice whether you let it affect you or not.”
– Valerie Bertinelli

Stress, the least favorite of all emotions, is something experienced by each individual at some point in their lives. A man could have died before finding his love, but not before facing stress.

Stress can be defined, echoing the oxford dictionary, as “a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy”. Horrendous as it sounds, it has its own merits. Hans Seley, the man to define stress for the first time, differentiated between the good and the bad stress. He called the good stress “eustress” while the bad stress remained “stress”.

You can detect if you’re experiencing unhealthy levels of stress. If you are unable to complete tasks and your attention span has shortened, you catch colds more often, have body aches and diseases, headaches, short tempered and have trouble sleeping or sleep too much, don’t feel like eating or eat too much and are always at your nerves ends – assuming these are not the traits you were born with – you are definitely experiencing loads of stress.
The positive and negative impacts of this emotional state are discussed below.

Positive and negative effects of stress
Positive effects of stress

According to experts, stress is the best motivation in the world. Stress helps to meet deadlines and accomplish goals. Stress in a small dose is extremely beneficial in helping you achieve the impossible.

Stress activates several mechanisms in our body, a stronger memory being one of them. The most important, however, is the fight or flight mechanisms. As soon as our body detects stress, it starts producing chemicals like epinephrine and cortisol which eventually improves our focus. An increased heart rate and sweating is accompanied by the senses to pull your hand back when you touch something hot. The brain is programmed to work better, both emotionally and physically, under moderate amounts of stress. So a little amount of stress in necessary in one’s life. It helps us protect ourselves from the dangers of the outside world. The instincts to duck out a ball hurled your way or to jump out of the range of a rashly driven vehicle is often initiated because of stress.

A moderate level of stress also contributes towards an improved immune system.

So it doesn’t really hurt to be a little stressed at times. Good stress or eustress is a motivator, cognitive enhancer as well as a physical enhancer. Loads of stress, however, is a whole new story. We should definitely not harbor stress in our minds for a prolonged period.

Negative effects of stress

Higher levels of stress decrease the immunity of the body. Fatigue and depression start creeping in. Too much of epinephrine is harmful for the heart. This leads to anxiety attacks and heart disorders.

One may start facing a loss of appetite or an increase in hunger. This decreases the glow of one’s skin and results in him/ her loosing or gaining weight, which is extremely harmful for their metabolism.

One may also develop insomnia. Dark circles would be the least of their problems when fatigue takes a toll. A lack of concentration will be inevitable.

Anger, fear and insecurities start creeping in due to stress which results in an increased amount of epinephrine to be released. Apart from this, hydro-cortisone is also released in our blood. All these factors play up to create a chaos of the body’s homeostasis.

It is extremely harmful for the body as it causes an increasing in our pulse rate. We also tend to sweat and breath faster. Stress can lead to problems like asthma, headaches, backaches, diabetes; heart attacks an can even prove to be carcinogenic. It can cause depression whereby one may attempt suicide, in other words, stress can cause death.

Conclusion:

As humans, it is our duty to be considerate towards one another. Pressure at work and school are the top factors causing stress in our society. But it isn’t healthy to harbor this pressure for prolonged periods. It is our duty to look into our well being and discard stress related issues as trivial.

As Hans Seley puts it, “Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one. It’s not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it. Man should not try to avoid stress any more than he would shun food, love or exercise.”

Positive and negative effects of industrialization

Industrialization refers to the development of industries on a wide scale in an expanse of land and region. During industrialization, extensive changes in economy to accommodate the change of crowd from agrarian to an industrial nature had been made. The eighteenth and the nineteenth century saw a lot of the industrial revolution which changed the world. Europe and Britain were the ones to catalyze it. It had its merits and demerits like every other objective in the world. Industrialization paved way for imperialism and the mighty “colonial era”. It was a disaster for certain countries, yet it brought about development that helped sustain the human race to a large extent.
The mid nineteenth century saw the second level of the industrial revolution with the betterment of the steam engines. The East Asia remains the latest region to be industrialized.

Positive and negative effects of industrialization
Positive effects of industrialization

The best outcome of industrialization was a better standard of living. A sense of betterment of social standards was felt worldwide as the level of incomes improved. Factory owners could now manufacture and sell stuff much faster, which meant an increase in the gross sale.

Since factories needed a lot of workers, skilled as well as unskilled, a lot of people found new jobs. The joy of employment radiated off the people, creating a harmonious environment.

A new sense of the value of time and labor was imbedded into people. A lot of time was saved as machines worked longer and faster than humans. This ability mixed with the human efficiency made a terrific combo to initiate world progress. As more products could now be manufactured, the prizes of products went down a notch. Cheaper products meant better access and affordability. The society, on a whole, was coming at par.

The most impactful effect of industrialization was, of course, the development it brought about. Gone were the days when majority of the people lived in farms. Sprawling cities with a huge number of residents sprung up near factories and industries. The concept of Urban and Rural was redefined. Development had a whole new meaning. Urbanization – the act of moving from villages to cities and contribute to its development – was at its peak during industrialization.

Industrialization has also promoted the growth of transportation facilities. With an increasing need to export and import items in a speedy fashion, the transportation sector saw an amazing development era. The world has now become a small place, where you can travel ‘round the globe in a matter of few hours.

Negative effects of industrialization

Child labor saw a rise during the era of industrialization. Factory owners saw the end of all their issues in children as they were the perfect “unskilled” personals for their jobs; they were easier to handle, worked for a fraction of wages their adult counterparts demanded, and could work in little, confined compartments as well.

Slowly, wage slavery came into the scene where workers were paid far less than they deserved. Their working hours were 10-14 hours a day on an average. They were exposed to hazards such as noise pollution, heat pollution and dangerous machinery. Accidents were a common thing with nobody to object to such dangerous working conditions. In desperation to work, workers never complained. Slowly, the workers had less than adequate money to keep up their living standards.

Growing urbanization also led to crowding. City slums were developed where living conditions were horrendous. Pollution was least of their problems as proper hygiene and sanitation disappeared.

Pollution was an alarming problem. Natural resources started getting consumed at an outrageously fast rate and the soil, water and air were polluted beyond repair. Acid rain, death of aquatic life and decreasing fertility of lands were just the beginning.

Local artisans and cottage workers were the most affected by industrialization. They didn’t only lose their job, but mankind lost creative minds. The society slowly became a chaos. Dharnas and strikes became a common occurrence. Inflation was the last nail in the coffin. The poor became a completely different society while the rich were indifferent to such issues.

Factory owners lost their ethics, craving more and more money. Capitalists started making profit at the cost of the common man’s hard earned money. The poor started looting and smuggling. Criminal activities were promoted amongst the poor who had no option but this to stay alive.

Very wise words by Sun Yat-sen remind us of our core duties before embarking on the mission to reach the moon, figuratively speaking. Echoing Yat-sen, I’d say,
“Because of poverty, we must adopt the capitalist means of production to develop our resources to get rich. However, if we ignore the issue of social justice at the beginning of China’s industrialization, we will sow the seeds of class warfare in the future.”

Movies on the television and online games on the computer nowadays seem to promote violence openly, making it look very normal. This induces wrong values in the society, especially the children. Media in these terms shows all kind of negative effects on every one.

  • Risky Sexual Behavior:

Media these days is seen to promote too much sexual stuff in every form. Children and teenagers, at their age, are prone to get easily swayed or confused by this. The irresponsible exposure to such stuff only induces a risky sexual behavior among people and children which is not good in any way.

  • Advertisement mania:

Thanks to the media, everything nowadays is getting commercial. Teenagers and children are led to believe that happiness can only be bought, not felt. By commercializing everything, human minds have led to believe that every such thing is good for the society, or at least important.

  • Obesity:

With the increased exposure to media devices, obesity is seen to increase in people. They are hooked to either the electronic media or the print media all day, thus eliminating the outdoor activities.

Positive and negative effects of globalization

In order to understand the positive and negative effects of globalization, we first need to under what globalization actually is. In simple words, globalization is a modernized development of the business world. The process that allows the flow of the business through the nations comes under the era of globalization. Taking a business to expand world-wide and generating revenues from international exposure is what mainly constitutes the globalization here.

To understand globalization, take an example of a shirt you own in your wardrobe. Often, we come across the tag that says ‘Made in China’ or ‘Made in Indonesia’. This means that maybe the silk was prepared in china, assembled in China or Thailand and shipped across the oceans before it reaches your local store. What is actually happening here is globalization. The flow of trade or business among different nations.

Globalization has been around for more than a decade now and is seen to be continuing for further long time. Not only the revenue generation, but globalization has become quite necessary to business world. Positive effects are many. But negative cling along too.

There have been many conflicts between people supporting the positivity of globalization, as well as the negativity of it. When looked closely, both of them seem to make sense. Following are explained some of the positive and negative effects of globalization.

Positive and negative effects of Globalization

Positive Effects of Globalization:

  • For the developing countries, globalization induces knowledge into the western society about the issues taking place here. This accounts for a better opportunity to improve the economy of such developing countries by improving their standard of living.
  • Globalization directly benefits the end customers because the competition witnesses and increase in business. This leads companies to lower their prices which proves to be beneficial for the common man.
  • Due to globalization, the media coverage in developing countries increases, resulting in drawing attention of the world to the human rights violations. Human rights can then be improved and protected because of this.
  • The competition at the global levels directly gives space for the creativity factor to increase and promotes innovation as a whole. The prices for the various services and commodities can also be kept under check in this way.
  • Developing countries are able to reap the benefits of current technology without undergoing many of the growing pains associated with development of these technologies.
  • Increased cooperation and improved interactions helps the governments to be able to work together towards common goals.
  • With the help of globalization, a greater access to foreign culture in the form of movies, music, food, clothing etc. can be pursued. This only increases the number of choices and of course, the awareness of what is going on around the world.

Negative Effects of Globalization:

  • On the negative side, the benefits of globalization are not able to reach everyone equally. The poor tends to getting poorer while the rich tends to get richer.
  • The concept of Outsourcing which is associated with the globalization is responsible for providing jobs to the population of one country. However, on the dark side, it takes away those jobs from another country. This leaves many people out without even giving them a chance.
  • Due to increased interaction through globalization among the different countries, the ideas and innovations of one tends to influence the other. This results in everything getting mixed up, making the individual countries lose their own specific culture and tradition.
  • Globalization inevitably triggers the chance of a disease spreading worldwide. This could include any invasive species that may end up resulting dreadful for the non-native ecosystems.
  • Talking about the international regulation, there is little, or none. This can have a very negative effect on the safety of people and the environment of a nation if taken in the wrong hands.
  • Large fast food firms such as Dominos and Mcdonalds seem to be spreading their franchisee in all parts of the world. This is as a result of the globalization which creates all kinds of negative effects on people’s health. Nations not familiar with such junk type gets easy access to it and end up deteriorating their well-being.

When seen in different contexts, the globalization can prove itself to be a boost for a developing country economy or it can prove to be harmful in certain cases. However, if some specific and strict international regulations can be set up and followed, then the negative effects of this can be taken down to a level where they can be controlled.
